stop the hate, defeat prop 8

This weekend, thousands upon thousands of people of all stripes will gather at designated sites across the nation in order to protest the inevitable passage of California's Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment that will likely repeal the legal marriages of thousands of gay couples in that state.

There are two events of this kind in North Texas, so take your pick and show up to one or the other. The time for silence is over. It's time to stand up and fight for our rights and the rights of our family, friends, and neighbors.

Torture Protests Planned for DFW Metroplex

Our previous posts highlight the hypocrisy of the Bush administration in its treatment of detainees in the war on terror. It's time for all good progressives to take a stand on this issue. Demonstrations are planned across the metroplex on October 5th to protest the Iraq war and the passage of the detainee bill that gave amnesty to torturers and made a mockery of due process.

Join the Fight Against the Fast Tracking of Coal Burning Power Plants

Several weeks ago Mayor Laura Miller of Dallas called on cities across the metroplex to join her in opposing Gov. Perry's fast tracking of seventeen new coal burning power plants. In today’s Dallas Morning News Mayor Miller and the TXU CEO make their cases. So far, fifteen Metroplex communities have joined Mayor Miller’s efforts.

CITIES THAT HAVE JOINED THE FIGHT
Arlington, Cedar Hill, Coppell, Dallas, DeSoto, Duncanville, Fort Worth, Frisco, Houston, Irving, Lancaster, McKinney, Plano, Rockwall, Wylie

The list includes nearly every major North Texas community except areas north of Dallas: Flower Mound, Denton, and Lewisville.

The Flower Mound Town Council meets tonight (8/21). Residents can submit a written comment asking their elected officials to join with Laura Miller and the communities fighting for cleaner air. If you can’t do it today, go to http://www.flower-mound.com/ and click the Agenda Item Comments on the left hand side and enter "public comment."

"The Big Buy" Showing at Peace Action Denton

If you haven't seen The Big Buy: How Tom DeLay Stole Congress, Mark Birnbaum and Jim Schermbeck's documentary on the fall of Tom DeLay, here's your chance. The Peace Action Denton group will be showing the movie this Saturday as part of their quarterly meeting. Congressional candidate Tim Barnwell will be saying a few words before the viewing of the film.
