smu graduate returns diploma to protest bush library

Utterly revolted by the idea of her alma mater playing host to a library and think-tank for President Bush, Marilyn Trent sent her diploma back to Southern Methodist University.

Trent encourages other SMU graduates to do the same if they can part with their hard-earned diplomas. "The returning of my diploma was a personal decision on my part. I saw it as an action that might encourage other alumni who are disgusted by this development to protest," Trent said in an email.

She also hopes that SMU faculty will continue to speak out against the Bush library complex on their campus: "If those associated with the university who have jobs at stake are brave enough to speak up, all the more should those of us who can't be intimidated be willing to join with them."

I continue to be suprised by the reaction to this facility. At the very least, this is a chance for SMU to be a permanent part of world history. I'd be against the partisan think tank, but the library should be ok

I graduated from Texas A&M and the Bush 41 library has done lots for the international profile of the university. Now I admit that the pub from the GW2 library may not all be good, but this man was (by a minority of voters) elected.

It is my understanding that the "think tank" cannot be separated from the library according to the Bush rules. As for being a part of world history....

Doesn't sound like an effective way to protest. Besides, the faculty board voted to oppose the Bush library. Interesting situation though.

I think it sends a damn strong statement to any Institution of Higher Education which would sell itself cheap for a little extra attention and false acclaim...

Especially when the institution in question is nationally known for it's excellence in Business and Law studies - two things that GW has never respected nor been competent at in the least!

It is about time that the more educated among us stand up and take back this country from the cluthes of simple minded, greedy men - and take a stand wherever and whenever we can - no protest is too small or wasted in this sad culture of docile complicity.

I think the childish behavior shows a lot about the rudeness and close-mindedness of a little girl who thinks her pathetic action is enough to invalidate history.

These young liberals need to get in touch with the real world and realize that they can't always get their way because there are OTHER people in the world too. Imagine that!
